Girls Love Linux

The article starts with:

If you think that Linux is only “for the boys”, then think again.

Right here, I can pretty much see that I won’t like this article too much. I don’t think Linux is only “for the boys.”

Anyway, there’s a female Linux community and even a Linux mailing list (named LinuxChix) designed for women.

LinuxChix started out in 1998-99 as only a mailing list, but then evolved into things such as bigger mailing lists, WikiChix and more.

The ending is priceless:

LinuxChix may sound like a girl band to some of you, but don’t mess with these women because most of them surely know how to hack :)

I really don’t like divided communities like this. Men and women should be equal, in my opinion. Splitting them up really won’t make it any more equal, and in the end, make it worse.

The article also describes that this was made because some women didn’t like the “locker room mentality” of other Linux forums. Has anyone at all seen this kind of mentality?

The Great Ubuntu-Girlfriend Experiment

Do you have to be real tech-savvy to be able to use Ubuntu fully? Some guy’s girlfriend tries out Ubuntu Linux for the first time and comes to find, that it’s not as easy as one might find.

The whole article is basically twelve simple tasks that almost any Windows user can do, with one exception: do it in Ubuntu.

She seems to get most of it down pretty simply, but others (like installing Flash) are hard.

In one comment, the guy says:

“Why doesn’t Firefox tell her to do this, or do it automatically like Rhythmbox does with codecs? Ubuntu ship Firefox with their own special modifications, couldn’t this be one of them?”

If I understand him correctly, then he, himself has not used Linux to the degree that he says he has. Firefox automatically tells you that you need to install plugins if you have to.

For example, if you open up YouTube and you don’t have Flash installed, a little bar will come up on Firefox and tell you. If you click it, it will then ask you how you would like to install it.

However, I do think that Linux is somewhat more tech-oriented than Windows since you actually have to open up the terminal a few times.

Fox News Hates Linux Users

So if you try to watch a video on Fox News in Linux, you can’t? This guy wants people in the *nix community to rise up against Fox News and to make them see that *nix members want in too.

In my opinion, why would you even want to be going to Faux News?

Jack Thompson hounds Rockstar boss’s…mother?

Jack Thompson, the guy you know and hate, has sent a letter to Rockstar boss’s, Strauss Zelnick, mom?

In it, Thompson says:

“The pornography and violence that your son traffics in is the kind of stuff that most mothers would be ashamed to see their son putting into the hands of other mothers’ children.

Maybe you, Mrs. Zelnick, were so taken by your handsome son that you spared the rod and spoiled the child. That would explain why he has brought you, by the way he presently acts, to shame.”

To read practically the rest, read the source.

3G iPhone Due on June 9, Analysts Say

The 3G iPhone is due to come out on June 9th, 2008.

The Apple Conference is also to come on June 9th, and go to June 13th. More products are due to arise.

Shaw Wu also said that

“…the 2.5G model could have a “minor casing change” and a price drop to between US$299 and $349, compared to the current $399.”

Apple feels confident that they will reach their goal of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008.

The iPhone will only be as good as AT&T’s network. Hopefully, it comes out swell. I don’t care too much, since I don’t own an iPhone.

Caution : Hdmi2.com is a Scam!

“Hey cam,

you tell me how to install ushc or hdmi so i can wach *BLEEP*, i keep getting this black screen that says go to hdmi2.com to download the latest driver to play the movie …
thanks”

Ight, I didn’t download this, but from what I’ve seen from their site, and what the rest of the email said, I have to say this is about the hugest scam I’ve ever seen. The sad part is apparently, some of you are falling for it; there is no download to make the movie magically play.

What you’re downloading is a 2 hour movie that has a black background, no audio, and it says go to hdmi2.com. When you get to the site the first thing you see is, “You help us and we help you.” Honestly, does this sound like a legit source? No, so bottom line, they are editing the movies in torrents, and asking for you personal info and credit cards.

You all can fool around and look for these drivers or delete, give up, and wait for it to come out like everyone else. (Honestly why would you have even tried downloading this movie, its not even in theaters yet not till the second.)

The Pirate Bay Smashes 12,000,000 BitTorrent Users

TPB has announced that today, they have reached the amazing, awesome, speechless 12 million peer mark.

Brokep said that regular peers were getting less common as seeders soared among them:

In 2008, the seeders amount to an impressive 50% of total tracker peers, further indication if it was needed that the desire to share clearly trumps the efforts of anti-piracy agencies.

He also wants to have every one of those 12 million invite a friend so that way, they could easily break 15 million, and probably 20 million.

It sure does look that way, and I can’t wait for there to be 24 MILLION people downloading (and seeding!) at the bay.

This week, Nintendo announced that they have sold over 1 billion dollars in these consoles. Its not hard to see how these two sell well with their lower starting prices, and wireless Internet with the DS.

A huge congratulations is in order Nintendo for this accomplishment.
